The New Milton Memorial Centre is a Registered Charity (Reg. no: 270889) The Centre is organised and managed by a group of Trustees and an elected Management Committee who administer the facility on behalf of the residents of New Milton, the ultimate owners of the facility. Most recently amended in 2015, the Declaration of Trust states that the Centre should be used as a Community Centre for the educational, social and recreational purposes for the inhabitants of the parish of New Milton.
The original War Memorial Hall was built in 1921 to commemorate those who died during the Great War and became a focal point in the life of the town between the two world wars. A Declaration of Trust was made between the Trustees of the War Memorial Hall and the Chairman & Committee of the New Milton & District British Legion Club in 1946 and continues to serve as the home of the Royal British Legion today. The original Hall burnt down in 1978 and the existing Hall was built from the compensation and local fund raising in about 1981 under the expert guidance of John Burgess, Chairman of the trustees and his co-trustee Brian Maugham.
As part of that legacy to the people of New Milton, a separate Memorial Room was built within the Centre, which remembers those of its citizens who gave their lives in the service of our country in both world wars. Also remembered are those civilians who lost their lives in two enemy bombing raids on New Milton during the Second World War.
